How is the Technical Pack provide benefits to Manufacturers 2021?

Start your business with a vision. Now is the time to get in touch with apparel manufacturers and let them do the magic to turn your ideas into a marketable product. The reputation and success of your business depend on the effectiveness of this process. So, if you make sure you prepare the specs in advance, you are on the right foot.

Once you have found the right manufacturer for your brand, open and precise communication is required to turn your ideas into consumables. What’s the best way to share your vision?

Unsurprisingly, you don’t send rough sketches to a creator to do the trick. If you’ve worked in the clothing industry or done some basic research, you’ve probably heard of a “tech pack”. If not, see how this tool can benefit your fashion business. A technical pack is a connection between your ideas, your design, and your final product. Think of it as your brand guide for apparel manufacturers.

Have you ever needed a technical pack?

If you work for a fashion brand, designer, clothing or manufacturing industry, you have probably come across this term before. While this is a pretty standard term, you’d be surprised how often people get upset over a tech pack.

However, as one of the most important tools in apparel and apparel design and manufacture, no manufacturer who knows what they are doing will waste your time unless you provide a detailed technical pack.

At G Studio, we provide detailed tech pack design, and apparel manufacturing services to over more than 1000 customers. Therefore, we spend a lot of time creating factory-made clothing samples and technical packs.

We have created many of our own technical pack templates that many people download daily. So we’ve had the opportunity to refine our technical pack process to such an extent that manufacturers rarely have to ask questions. More importantly, the end product is always what the customer intended.

You are ready to launch your own fashion brand, and you know your factory needs a detailed tech pack for every piece you want to produce.

Is it exactly a technical pack, and why are they so important?

Technical packs are an essential part of any clothing and fashion company’s development, procurement, and costing process. There are some opinions about the best way to create a tech pack.

A tech pack consists of a series of training documents that a clothing manufacturer must convert into a product. Many apparel companies allow designers, sample makers, and product developers to create custom spreadsheets or PDM / PLM solutions to create detailed technical packs.

Using detailed tech packs is not only a de facto contract between the design company and the manufacturer; it also has many advantages. These include:

More precise samples from the manufacturer

The better way to compare prices with different manufacturers

Easier quality control

More organized information on both sides of the table

Bottom line: there is a better chance that valuable time will not be wasted.

Lots of ways to manage technical packs

There are many ways to create tech packs. Surprisingly, many fashion and apparel companies use spreadsheets or tools such as illustrations or the like, despite concerns about data security, transparency, and collaboration. Others take a completely different approach and implement more complex and frequent PLM solutions.

Between the two options mentioned, there is a third part that extends a system that is already in place in every company: the ERP system. Microsoft Dynamics forms the basis for G Studio, which hundreds of companies use to create detailed tech packs.

Technical packs created by G studio

Let’s see how G Studio manages the tech packs, from creating information to sharing it with the manufacturer, to using it to improve the final product.

Create knowledge

Typical information that is part of the tech pack is, for example:

Measurement card

Garment specifications

Colors

Prints

Labelling

The tech pack contains information to help the manufacturer understand how the garment is made. Spreadsheets and various drawing tools are widely used for this purpose.

G Studio electronically collects all information required for the tech pack and makes it available in the system via platforms for direct use by anyone who needs it.

Uniform layout

Ensure consistency with a consistent layout for the tech pack. Basic style information on each Tech Pack page and a consistent layout makes it easy for the manufacturer to work with the Tech Pack and return the correct samples.

Tech packs created in G Studio have a flexible. Yet, consistent layout based on industry best practices allows users to communicate with manufacturers while reducing the risk of sample errors.

Share with the manufacturer

When the tech pack is ready, it is sent to the manufacturer. This typically involves creating one or more PDF files, attaching them to an email, and sending them.

From G Studio, you send information directly from the system without changing the application. Some clothing companies go all the way and use online supplier portals where all the information about tech packs is available online for the manufacturer.

Reviews based on examples

After sending the Tech Pack, the manufacturer will send back a sample. Sample retrieval may result in changes to the original garment specifications. These changes or updates can be easily programmed directly into G Studio, and a new Tech Pack can be launched.

 Reuse Technical Pack Information

With all information about a tech pack captured in one system, plus reviews, historical data, and many more, it becomes much easier to build better tech packs. The better the technical details and style specifications on the first try, the more likely the manufacturer will return a correct sample. All of this translates to shorter lead times, lower sampling costs and better end products.

Technical packs are a project

Officially, a tech pack is a comprehensive guide that outlines everything the factory needs to create a block design and then successfully produce a sample of your fashion product. Tech Packs are also a great place to archive all development and follow-up notes during the sampling process, including customization notes, material changes, and supplier information.

Why detailed technical packs are so important

If there is one area of the design development process, you do not want to skip tech packs. Like many things in life, you pay for what you get. If you decide on a cheap option to create your own tech packs, don’t say you weren’t warned! Poor quality tech packs lead to a lower power champion, which means you’ll be spending more money in the long run, just trying to find a decent, decent champion to work with. Not to mention the stress of going back and forth in your factory who may not understand what you need. A detailed tech pack should overcome language barriers. No matter where you choose production, tech packs are perfect for you and keep your factory happy.

Get accurate examples

It is common to change a few things after producing the first sample. You don’t want an example so far from your imagination that you basically have to start to get the first example that you can actually work with. Don’t forget that you are paying for every model and model review you need. So why not spend a little more on a tech pack in the first place? There is a great analogy; there are three adjectives, but you can only choose two: quality, cheap and fast. High quality and fast tech packs will not be cheap, fast and fast tech packs will not be cheap and quality, tech packs will not be cheap fast.

A technical pack serves as a contract

As detailed instructions come in my technical packs, everyone involved can refer to them to make sure everything is done on the garment properly. A tech pack is also a kind of agreement between you and the factory. When your factory changes fairs or components, your Tech Pack supports exactly what you requested and ensures that you don’t pay anything for the things you didn’t ask for.

A technical pack should contain…

Technically proportionate and correct sketch from the front and back view of the garment. Sometimes, depending on the product, aside, interior or close-up is required.

Material Bill

A complete list of all the items needed by the factory to make your garments. From sewing thread to the main fabric, buttons, zippers and many more, everything needs to be laid out.

CAD Color:

Exemplary fashion sketches of any color you wish to produce and corresponding Pantone references.

The season, the date, the name of the style, the name of the designer, and the brand’s name.

Page numbers.

Size range for each piece.

Test measurement.

Add room for the factory model metabolism.

Written notes describing the main features of the design.

Concise and balanced measurements on the half.

Evaluation measurements for each dimension in the area.

The type of stitches and finishes each part of the garment will have – industry terminology is key here!

Brand details and care label.

Inspirational images to support your design.

The field for appropriate revision notes and necessary changes to the initial sample.

This is by no means an exhaustive list as every clothing and fashion product is different and may require additional details to convey the design and construction properly. Industry-standard terminology is key to creating a high-quality, tech pack that can break down language barriers and deliver them everywhere.

Tech pack is too important to the manufacturing process not to choose the highest possible quality. Because the more detailed your tech packs are, the less room for error there is.

Tips for reducing manufacturing defects in apparel – Design of technical packs

Brands ask themselves this question: “Why do we need Tech Packs projects?” If you want customers to like your clothing brand, you need to build the process. It would help if you also believed that you are offering something that you trust. Customers don’t buy clothes that don’t fit them. This is common, and everyone on the planet has had this unpleasant experience. The tech pack design is an important part of the apparel design and apparel manufacturing process. You will agree that one person can do not all work. You can’t do it all by yourself, no matter how smart you are. At some point, you need support in real-world areas where your creativity and the technical know-how of a tech pack designer can work together. This not only improves the quality of the products but also makes the business more efficient.
